This is an aerial photograph of The Nek Cemetery; it was taken at 400 feet on the 25th of June 1923 (DVA, 2014). The cemetery is in construction with the walls and the cross still being erected, while the abandoned trenches from eight years ago still lie visible within the photograph (DVA, 2014). There is also a Turkish built monument, Sergeant Mehmet’s Tomb, which stands on the Turkish frontline of the Nek and commemorates all those lost in this battle (DVA, 2014)
Rationale:
This image was selected for the exhibition to showcase the grave nature and the lasting extent of war. This picture contrasts the erecting of a cemetery with the open and still visible trenches and terrain where the Battle of the Nek took place. This image is a great reminder for students that war is still far reaching and effects people whether it was eight years ago or a hundred years ago.
