Description

This photograph depicts the battle field of the Nek and was taken by Wilkins, who was taken to Gallipoli by Bean himself (DVA, 2014) This photo is taken from the position of the old Australian front line of 1915 and the photo is directed towards the Turkish front line (BVA, 2014). In the center of the Turkish front line is a memorial known as Sergeant Mehmet’s Tomb (DVA, 2014), this was erectly shortly after the evacuation in honor of those who fell in the serve fighting in this area (AWM, 2014).

Rationale:

This photo was selected for the exhibit as a way of showing students the lasting effects of war, it shows the gravity of the war through the shape of the landscape and the bones scattered throughout the photo. This image was selected hoping that it would draw the students in to the idea of the war being a waste of human life and the Anzac ideals shown by men who fought in this battle. The image was also selected in hope of using it for a source analysis activity and for those students who have low literacy or those that are visual learners.
